Women in Architecture winner announced
The winner of the 2016 Architect of the Year at the Women in Architecture Awards is Jeanne Gang, founder of Chicago’s Studio Gang.
The event was established by The Architectural Review and his year the panel of judges included Lord Norman Foster.
Studio Gang, whose work in Chicago includes the Aqua hotel and condo tower in Lakeshore East, the WMS Boathouse at Clark Park along the north branch of the Chicago River, and the upcoming supertall Vista Tower for Lakeshore East, was recognised for a “commitment to working both sustainably and democratically with local communities.”
The judges also praised the studio’s work on the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The building is not only significant for being the first of its kind as a purpose-built social justice facility, but the judges highlighted Studio Gang’s transparent design process and the use of innovative materials, such as sustainable wood masonry on the exterior alongside the use of some 3-D printed materials.
