Winter World Cup recommended for Qatar

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar should be held in November and December according to a taskforce from government body FIFA, Sky News is reporting.

The group is meeting in Doha today (Tuesday) to decide on recommendations for the timing of the tournament. A decision could be reached next month.

But holding the event in the winter months is strongly opposed by European football leagues because of the potential disruption to clubs. However it has been muted that if this decision is reached the tournament may be shortened and clubs could also receive compensation.

Britain’s FIFA vice-president Jim Boyce, who is on the executive committee which will have to ratify the task force recommendations, said: “If it’s going to be in Qatar then let’s agree on a date in the winter and look forward to a wonderful World Cup there because you cannot possibly take people there to play it in the summer.

“My personal preference would be for January/February but then you have problems with the Olympics so if it has to be in November/December then so be it.”

Stadiums for the event are already under construction.
