The Canadian University in Dubai launches Smart Cities student competition
As part of Design Week Dubai 2016, The Canadian University is hosting a competition, welcoming entries from all universities. There will be three options for entry for the competition based on the Dubai’s Smart City Initiative. As Dubai has evolved into a 21st Century metropolis in a short time, the initiative relies on the pillars of life, society, mobility, economy, governance and environment. The competition will be launched on 18 September and 9 October is the deadline to submit.
Option 1: As part of the ‘Silicon Park’ project there will be charging docks for smart devices incorporated in the streetlights. Students are asked to design a cover/pod incorporating the streetlight and allowing the user time to interact with the technology in Dubai’s climate.
Option 2: As a part of the ‘Silicon Park’ project there will be commercial and residential areas, running and cycling tracks, shopping centre, etc. Considering the urban landscape of this type of project, students are asked to design a wayfinding pattern that would be used as a path/flooring, which can be manipulated with colour or scale. This pattern must embrace tradition and sustainable materials.
Option 3: There will be charging stations for electric cars and smart rechargeable bikes around the park and residential area. Students are required to design a car shelter that covers two electric car docking stations. This device must embrace tradition and technology at the same time.
Exhibition of Top 10 finalists will be held from 24–29 October while the winner will be announced on 24 October.
