Sharjah Art Foundation brings Experimenter Curators’ Hub to the UAE
A new cross-cultural initiative from Sharjah Art Foundation (SAF) will see a UAE audience participating in an important annual curators’ meet held in India by the Experimenter Learning Program Foundation.
The eighth edition of Experimenter Curators’ Hub (ECH) focuses on conversations around curatorial practice and exhibition making. SAF has announced that it will livestream all three days of the hub on its website, which will be held from July 26-28, 2018, in Kolkata.
SAF will also invite attendees to view the hub’s sessions from Gallery 2 in Al Mureijah Square on the last day, July 28. SAF will host a networking brunch on that day, offering UAE-based curators, practitioners and the public an opportunity to connect, followed by an interactive discussion during the closing panel, moderated by curator and art critic Murtaza Vali. Sharjah attendees can also ask questions to this year’s participating curators in Kolkata. This event is free and open to the public. To register, click here.
This partnership builds on SAF’s mission to support exchange and dialogue with local, regional and international art institutions and communities. Every year, ECH invites curators from around the world to present their practice. The audience plays an active role in these presentations. The final day ends with a moderated panel discussion with all the participating curators.
The weighty line-up of participating curators at ECH this year includes Adam Szymczyk, artistic director of documenta 14, 2017, Jeebesh Bagchi, curator of Shanghai Biennale, 2016, Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung, founding director of SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin and Shumon Basar, cultural critic and commissioner of Global Art Forum. Other participants include independent curator Erin Gleeson, urbanists Prasad Shetty and Rupali Gupte, professor Kavita Singh of Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), researcher Sabih Ahmed of Asia Art Archive, Léuli Eshraghi, curator at the Institute of Modern Art in Mianjin and Övül Ö. Durmusoglu, curator at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin. The hub will be moderated by curator, researcher and writer Natasha Ginwala.
SAF is also in partnership with Experimenter Learning Program Foundation to set up a year-round Sharjah-based iteration of the Experimenter Learning Program (ELP). It will feature annual workshops and learning modules on contemporary and performing arts, curatorship, film, writing, language and social culture. Its year-long schedule includes the annual Experimenter Curators’ Hub, workshops, salon-style classrooms and lecture performances.
