New school for autism opens in Abu Dhabi

The New England Center for Children (NECC), a world leader in education, research and treatment for autism, recently opened a new state-of-the-art school in Abu Dhabi to transform the lives of autistic children and their families.

The new NECC-Abu Dhabi facility, located on a 13,000m2 site in Mohammed Bin Zayed City, contains two specialized buildings: one for daytime education of 100 students, and one for housing 24 children who benefit from more intensive care and supervision.

The school and residential campus was designed by U.S. based architecture, engineering and interior design firm LEO A DALY, which worked closely with the NECC to incorporate spaces that support the unique needs of children impaired by autism spectrum disorder.

The project, an initiative of the Abu Dhabi health authority (SEHA) and the Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC), was completed in February 2013, with the facility now providing specialised education and medical care.
