DEWA reveals ambitious rooftop solar plans
Rooftop solar schemes could provide a fifth of Dubai’s power needs by 2030, according to Dubai Electricity & Water Authority’s CEO HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, and reported by Construction Week.
Speaking at a MENA Renewable Energy Forum held at Dubai’s Grosvenor House Hotel this week, Al Tayer said: “We have identified that distributed rooftop solar power sources can make a practical contribution to Dubai’s power needs in the order of 20%, or around 2,500MW by 2030.”
Al Tayer also discussed plans for the 1,000MW capacity Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum Solar Park, which will have a 1,000MW capacity when it is expected to complete in 2030. The first phase, containing 13MW of solar PV plant, will be operational by the end of next year.
He said that the emplementation of Dubai’s 20-year integrated strategy plan, which began last year, is “driven by our vision to make Dubai a role model to the world in energy security and efficiency”.
“By 2030, Dubai’s average energy growth is projected to be in the range of 4-5% per annum and our target under the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, is to reduce energy consumption by 30% through the implementation of enhanced energy-efficient initiatives and, by the same token, to significantly reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide.”
Currently, 99% of Dubai’s power and desalinated water is fuelled by gas, while around 1% is provided by burning oil. By 2030, the emirate wants to generate at least 5% of its energy from renewables, 12% from clean coal and 12% from nuclear power.
“It is well known that the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is rich in hydrocarbon resources,” said Al Tayer.
“However, with the increase in population and electricity consumption as well as climate change, concern is mounting over the future security of energy sources.
“We at DEWA share the same goals as the rest of the world to secure a diverse and sustainable energy supply, through the integration of renewable energy into our energy mix, rationalization of consumption and reduction of our carbon footprint,” he added.
