cc-tapis launches new rug collection inspired by Venice

Young Italian designers Giorgia Zanellato and Daniele Bortotto have partnered with cc-tapis, an Italian carpet manufacturer, to create Giudecca, a new rug inspired by Venice.

Giudecca is part of the Acqua Alta collection which they designed for the historic Venetian company, Rubelli.

The entire collection is entirely dedicated to Venice and every piece was born from reflecting on the lagoon-based city and walking through the Venetian streets or “calli” searching for details and elements to draw inspiration from.

Commenting their design process, Zanellato and Bortotto explain: “Through our own language, searching to revisit key contemporary elements and techniques connected to the past and our history. In this case, we interpreted the iconic Venetian steps and landings on the canals with a particularly graphic approach paying special attention to colour.”

The design duo met while at university at ECAL in Switzerland and began collaborating upon their return to Italy in 2013.

Both designers have previously worked with a variety of materials, ranging from glass, metal, leather, marble and resin before they started working on fabrics and rugs.

“It was fascinating to see how an idea could be translated in such a unique way through a technique as particular as hand knotting. The silks and wools, and the artfully combined colours, led to such an exciting result for us,” they said.
