AUD students design lever handles for Expo 2020 Mobility Pavilion

Students from the Interior Design department at the American University in Dubai took part in a competition to design lever handles for the Foster + Partners-designed Mobility Pavilion for Dubai Expo 2020.

AUD collaborated with security and access solutions firm Dormakaba to create its design proposals. One student from the university had previously worked with the firm for level handles for the other two theme pavilions – Opportunity and Sutstianbility – which is where the idea of the competition stemmed from.

The first prize went to Salwa Hassan who emphasised the tactile nature of design in her work, focusing on organic forms.

Lena Kinj’s wave-like patterns corresponds to position of one’s fingers when touching a door handle, won second place in the competition. The third place winner Nour Al Jaroudi focuses on the element of light as the spirit of the Expo 2020.

Following the competition, AUD will present these designs to the team at Dubai Expo 2020 as potential designs for the pavilion once built.
