Inspired by the Paper Fig Shell, Dubai-based studio H2R Design has created warm and welcoming interiors for the family-owned restaurant in the heart of Sharjah, which serves homemade dishes and desserts.
Founded in 2015 by husband and wife team, Nawal Al Nuaimi and Ahmed Almazrouei, the Paper Fig is located in an ex-industrial zone and caters to the local residents and university students of Sharjah.
“Paper Fig is an extremely delicate shell found on specific beaches and are rarely found undamaged,” says Hassan Roomi from H2R Design.
The design team was tasked to create a space that reflects the concept of the carefully crafted desserts.
“Little gems of goodness that are appealing to the eyes and mouths, are the focal point of the shop,” explains Roomi. “The overall interior concept had to reflect the name Paperfig, a name given to shells only found in specific shores that are so delicate, a whole one is rarely found. Our interpretation was that the desserts share that relationship, the overall aesthetic of the space act as a home to them.”
Roomi’s favourite design feature is the reclaimed timber, used for wall cladding.
“The contrast between the roughness and rawness with the delicate desserts and counter provide a balance that we felt reflected the brand beautifully,” he adds.
For the design team, one of the challenges was sourcing materials locally with age and character that would also be durable and last long in such great footfall.
