Caglayan Architects use vintage elements to create nostalgic experience for Istanbul restaurant

Istanbul-based Caglayan Architects is the design team behind the new industrial-looking interiors of Demirci Restaurant, located in Fatih, one of the old districts of the city.

Following the brief to create a space that will offer its visitors “ escape from the busy city life” while taking them on “a delicious tour” to the past, the designers created both functional and harmonised space with the strong references to the historical atmosphere of the old town.

For the 150m2 restaurant, Caglayan Architects chose a neutral colour palette but added pops of bright blue on the walls and some kitchen furniture.

The light sky-blue traditional floor tiles have been randomly placed throughout the space but in a more contemporary layout.

Long custom-made benches are placed against the walls and have been upholstered in light beige leather to match the tiles, along with dark Thonet wooden chairs.

The main feature wall, opposite the entrance and glass windows, is adorned with vintage mirrors and raised wooden wall panels, which are painted in blue, reflecting the historical context from inside of the restaurant.

The team kept the ceiling exposed, using the same shade of blue to paint electrical conduits and ventilation ducts.

The lighting was also custom designed to fit with the overall concept of merging traditional elements with industrial-looking features. Suspended from the ceiling, the pendants are placed above the tables to provide more intimate atmosphere.

The black rounded lights surprise with an oxidised bronze finish interior, which is further enhanced with warm LED filament bulbs, providing a vintage look just like original Edison style filament bulbs.
