As of Sunday (May 22 2022), the Sultanate of Oman lifted all Covid precautions in public places.
This means residents and tourists alike no longer need to wear face masks or practise social distancing in places including schools and supermarkets.
Oman’s decision
Oman’s supreme committee announced the decision on the changes to Oman’s Covid precautions on Sunday (22 May), along with a request that people continue to observe preventive health measures, such as wearing a mask if they have been in contact with someone with the virus.
There have been 389,943 infections and 4,260 coronavirus-related deaths reported in Oman since the pandemic began, according to Reuters data.
During the peak of the global pandemic, the sultanate closed its land borders and restricted flights to citizens and residents.
Around the GCC
Wearing masks outdoors in Abu Dhabi and Dubai became optional from 26 February 2022.
The relaxation of laws came due to the decrease in the number of cases in the country.
To date, face masks are still mandatory in closed areas, which include indoor spaces such as schools, shopping malls and more.
In March 2022, Saudi Arabia lifted Covid prevention measures in the Kingdom. Visitors to the country no longer need to present proof of a negative PCR test to enter the country, according to a statement by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Institutional quarantine requirements will be entirely removed, and all travellers from the countries currently red-listed will be allowed entry.
