Dubai Creek gets stunning new architectural addition to its locality. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, recently visited the newly constructed Infinity Bridge over Dubai Creek, officially inaugurating it for public use.
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that Al Shindagha Tunnel in the direction from Deira to Bur Dubai will temporarily close for two months from this Sunday onward. This closure is coinciding with the opening of the Infinity Bridge for traffic on Sunday 16 January 2022.
In a statement released by Dubai Media Office, Sheikh Mohammed described the structure in Shindagha, Deira, as an ‘architectural masterpiece’, adding: “Our bridges are futuristic and our ambitions are endless”.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, and Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed, Chairman of the Dubai Council for Border Crossing Points Security joined the ruler of Dubai at the bridge’s opening ceremony.
Design of the Infinity Bridge
According to its website, Six Construct was appointed as the infrastructure contractor for the AED 394 million Shindagha Bridge project.
“The bridge’s iconic design features an architectural arch shaped in the form of the mathematical symbol for infinity,” it says. “The top of the infinity arch rises 42m, and approximately 2,400 tonnes of steel will be used in the construction of the bridge.”
Formerly known as Shindagha Bridge, the structure is part of an AED 5 billion project that will extend 13 kilometres along Sheikh Rashid Street, Al Mina district, Al Khaleej Street and Cairo Street. The 300-metre bridge features six lanes in each direction and rises 15 metres above the creek, allowing boats to pass underneath.
Accelerating growth
“The roads and transport sector is critical not only to accelerating economic growth but also enhancing the well-being of the community,” said Sheikh Mohammed in a statement.
“The rapid development of Dubai’s roads and transport network, with investments exceeding AED 140 billion over the past 15 years, reflects our belief in the role a strong infrastructure base plays in enhancing our global competitiveness, creating new growth opportunities, providing a supportive environment for business and ensuring the highest possible quality of life for citizens, residents and visitors to the emirate.”
The bridge can accommodate 24,000 vehicles per hour in both directions and features a combined 3-metre-wide track for pedestrians and cyclists.
