The master plan for the Bilaj Al Jazayer development by Edamah has been approved by Bahrain’s Higher Urban Planning Committee.
Bahrain Real Estate Investment Company (Edamah) announced the country’s Higher Urban Planning Committee has given the go-ahead to the 1.3 million square metre mixed-use project on the southwest coast of Bahrain.
Including the construction of a string of hotels, entertainment and leisure facilities, restaurants, and retail and residential areas, the megaproject’s master plan is designed to be in line with the kingdom’s commitment to bring carbon emissions to net zero by 2060.
Phase one of the master plan was developed by renowned international firm Fosters and Partners.
A balanced addition to Bahrain
Sustainability plays an important role in the overall layout of the development.
Green technologies will be used in the coastal city project to purify the air and reduce temperatures, said Khalid Al Rumaihi, chairman of Edamah.
The project will also feature shaded walkways to encourage walking and minimize the use of cars.
As part of the master plan, the buildings will be designed to reduce heat exposure so as to minimise the use of air conditioning during the summer months. The plan also details additional green design highlights such as water recycling facilities as well as generating electricity via solar energy.
Edamah’s CEO, Amin Al Arrayed further elaborated on the development’s economic and future plans.
“Edamah’s goal is to ensure that the Bilaj Al Jazayer general masterplan serves Bahrain’s economic and leisure interests, while at the same time minimising the environmental impact,” he said. “All future projects at Bilaj Al Jazayer will be developed in a holistic manner, with consideration to both cultural values and market demand. The public can expect a range of new project announcements in the coming months and years as we partner with local and international investors.”
