Construction begins on Es Devlin-designed UK Pavilion for Expo 2020 Dubai

Construction has started on Expo 2020 Dubai’s UK Pavilion, designed by London artist Es Devlin.

UK International Trade Secretary Dr Liam Fox broke ground on the pavilion on 27 June, days after work began on the Dutch pavilion.

He hailed it as a platform to showcase Britain's “ambition for the future” as it prepares to exit the European Union amid an ongoing leadership battle to pick the UK's next prime minister.

“The Expo provides a global platform to showcase our ambition for the future, and our participation provides excellent opportunities for UK businesses that have already won major contracts,” Fox said in comments carried by Emirates News Agency.

The UK Pavilion is located in the Opportunity district and will feature an ever-changing poem created by the millions set to visit the expo that will be beamed out from a 20m-high façade.

Every person who visits the pavilion will be able to donate one word that, by the end, will have a message created by everyone who visited. The words can be donated in Arabic, Chinese or English in keeping with the international context of the World Fair that kicks off on Tuesday, 20 October, 2020.

It was revealed earlier this week that increased investment in anticipation for Expo 2020 Dubai will help the UAE’s non-oil gross domestic product increase by 2.2%

This comes after the country’s non-oil economy grew by 1.6% in the first quarter of 2019, according to the Central Bank of the UAE.
