Art Jameel launches design competition for water fountain with Expo 2020
Inspired by the "tradition and spirit" of the sabeel, a traditional neighbourhood kiosk that provides passers-by fresh drinking water, the competition asks for designs of "innovative drinking fountains".
To be featured across the Expo 2020 site, the winning design(s) will offer accessible drinking water to visitors.
Up to three winning designs will be selected by the appointed jury, with Expo 2020 offering AED 100,000 in prize money to each winner. Registration for the open call opens today and closes on August 31, 2019.
The jury panel includes London-based architect Asif Khan; keeper of design, architecture and digital at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London Christopher Turner; dean at Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) Hani Asfour; director general at Sharjah Museums Authority Manal Ataya; chief pavilions and exhibitions officer at Expo 2020 Dubai Marjan Faraidooni; principal at Kuwait- and Spain-based AGi Architects Nasser Abulhasan; and Dubai- and Berlin-based writer and curator Shumon Basar.
